Breakthroughs: Avant-Garde Artists in Europe and America, 1950-1990

The Wexner Center’s inaugural publication, Breakthroughs is an extraordinary survey of avant-garde art. This substantial, thoroughly illustrated volume details the activities of avant-garde artists, musicians, performing artists, and film and video makers—from Laurie Anderson, Joseph Beuys, and John Cage to Yvonne Rainer, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol.

Breakthroughs: Avant-Garde Artists in Europe and America, 1950-1990 parallels the exhibitions and programs of the Wexner Center’s first year, including the inaugural trilogy of exhibitions Art in Europe and America: the 1950s and 1960s (held February 17 - April 22, 1990); Art in Europe and America: the 1960s and 1970s (held May 19 - August 5, 1990); and New Works for New Spaces: Into the Nineties (October 6 - January 6, 1990).

Edited by John Howell, with essays by Dore Ashton, David Bourdon, Brian O’Doherty, Lucy R. Lippard, Sally Brown, B. Ruby Rich, and interviews with artists including Ann Hamilton, Barbara Kruger, Bill T. Jones, and Spalding Gray. Click here for more information about the Wexner Center’s exhibitions.
